APA’s Upcoming International Learning Opportunities

APA's ongoing international strategy aims to advocate for the planning profession and facilitate learning exchanges with our peers worldwide that will benefit APA members. As part of this strategy, APA will have a role in two upcoming international planning convenings.

World Town Planning Day

Virtual Conference

On November 8, 2024, APA and its International Division are hosting an online conference in partnership with the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST. The theme is, "Homes Start with Planning," aiming to connect with APA's focus on delivering housing that not only meets our needs but also is equitable, inclusive, and sustainable.

This year's conference marks the 75th anniversary of World Town Planning Day.

The conference is free to register, and CM credit opportunities will be available for those who participate.

World Urban Forum (WUF12)

Cairo, Egypt

Furthering its mission to create great communities for all, APA also will be present at the World Urban Forum's (WUF) conference in Cairo, Egypt from November 4-8, 2024. Launched in 2001 by the United Nations, WUF12 will convene global stakeholders to discuss and work through solutions for sustainable urbanization. APA has participated in several WUF events over the years.

This year, representing APA will be APA President Angela D. Brooks, FAICP, and Petra Hurtado, PhD, chief foresight and knowledge officer. Brooks is a panelist on November 6 at "Scaling Up Affordable and Sustainable Housing Supply: Planning-Led Solutions and Leveraging Existing Housing Stock." This session will explore the intersection of housing and climate change. Additionally, Brooks will share with the international audience the Housing Supply Accelerator initiative working to increase housing supply production and increase the availability and affordability of housing in the U.S., emphasizing the need for multistakeholder collaboration.

In addition to the panel, APA also is co-sponsoring a booth, at which international attendees of WUF12 can learn about APA's foresight practice, focus on upskilling planners, and the important role of planning-led zoning reform efforts to increase the nation's housing supply. Joining APA at the booth are City Space Architecture, the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI), the International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISOCRAP), and the Urban Planning Society of China (UPSC).

To learn more about APA's participation and presence at WUF12, or to share that you will also be attending, please contact Petra Hurtado at phurtado@planning.org.
