Authoring for CM Credits
Authoring Basics
For every two-year CM reporting period, AICP members may claim up to 16 credits for authoring a planning-related article, journal article, or non-fiction book.
Article (4 CM credits per article)
To qualify for CM authoring credit, the article must be:
- Published in a periodical that is published at a consistent, defined interval; for example, monthly, quarterly, or annually.
- Aimed at advancing planning through leadership in education, research, advocacy, and ethical practice.
- Published in print, online, or both.

Published Journal Article (8 CM credits per article)
To qualify for CM authoring credit, the journal article must be:
- Published in a journal that is published at a consistent, defined interval; for example, monthly, quarterly, or annually.
- Aimed at advancing planning through leadership in education, research, advocacy, and ethical practice.
- Double-blind peer reviewed. The double-blind process is one in which the names of the reviewer(s) are not known to the author, and vice versa. Journal articles are written by experts, for experts.
- Published in print, online, or both.
Non-Fiction Book (16 credits per book)
To qualify for CM authoring credit, the non-fiction book:
- Must provide facts and information about planning or planning-related issues.
- Must be nonfiction; it is about a true historical event or a topic or issue that exists.
- May include illustrations (pictures) and words.
- Must be a book and not a chapter within a book.
Managing Authoring CM Claims
Once you have completed the authoring claim form, the CM credits will be added to your CM log.
You may edit and delete your CM claim for authoring by visiting your CM log.
The mandatory topics (AICP ethics, law, equity, and sustainability/resilience) are not eligible to be applied toward the authoring CM credit.
The article, journal article, or book you have authored must be published during the active CM reporting period for which you are claiming authoring credit. CM credits earned outside of your reporting period or before your AICP start date are not eligible.
