This position within the City’s Community Development Department will be responsible for professional work in current and long-range planning. Specifically, the Planner will review and analyze various land use applications including rezoning, plats and subdivisions, special use permits, and preliminary and final site development plans; prepare reports for various review bodies; respond to zoning and development inquiries; and participate on the Development Review Committee. The Planner will also be responsible for special planning projects assigned including assisting with the update of the City’s zoning code and the Rock Creek Trail Corridor (West) Improvement Study.
The City of Mission is a first-tier suburb of Kansas City located in northeast Johnson County, Kansas. The City is currently undergoing a development renaissance with several significant development projects either recently completed or currently under construction. This activity represents over two million square feet of either public, commercial, or residential redevelopment within the City.
The City adopted a new comprehensive plan in 2023 that will position the community for future, sustainable growth. A planning study of the Rock Creek Trail (east) corridor and a city-wide bicycle/pedestrian connectivity study were also recently adopted. The City is now embarking on a comprehensive update of its zoning code.
The Community Development Department is undertaking a transformation to be positioned as a high-performance group able to effectively manage development and redevelopment, building safety, and neighborhood support initiatives. The position of Planer will be instrumental in this effort.
