Outdoor Lighting

The city’s municipal code addresses outdoor lighting (§18.120). The ordinance is intended to reduce light pollution, glare, light trespass, and energy use. It provides definitions and lists exemptions and prohibited lighting types. Lighting plans are required for all development except existing single-family residences. The municipal code establishes general lighting performance standards and provides more specific standards for different lighting zones: residential, commercial/industrial, and open space. It also offers additional lighting standards for specific uses, as well as parks, trails, and wildlife corridors. It provides for procedures and timelines to correct reported light trespass.

Solar Energy

The city’s municipal code provides residential design standards that include solar energy design standards. Structures, streets, and lots should be designed to maximize solar orientation; HOA-maintained pools and spas must have solar cover and solar heating system; no structures or vegetation may obstruct solar access on adjoining parcels; collectors must be screened to the extent possible and color-coordinated with roof materials or structure colors; plumbing must include connections for solar energy systems (§18.20.060.H).

The same standards are provided for commercial districts (§18.25.060.O) and industrial districts (§18.30.080.J).
