Solar Energy
The city's municipal code includes a section on solar energy devices, permitting them on the roof of primary or accessory structures in all districts upon compliance with standards (§17.76.070). Design standards address location, screening, and aesthetics. Owners must sign a net-metering arrangement with the city. Subdivision CC&Rs may place more restrictions on solar energy devices than the city code.
Tiny Houses and Micro-Apartments
The city’s municipal code defines and regulates chassis-mounted tiny houses as a distinct type of dwelling. Its definition for “tiny home on wheels” stipulates a minimum first-floor living area of 140 ft2 (§17.10.030). Tiny homes on wheels are permitted as accessory dwelling units, subject to standards addressing permissible locations, units per lot, licensing and registration with the state department of motor vehicles, compliance with ANSI 119.2 or 119.5 (NFPA 1192) requirements, the ability to be towed, the inability to move on its own power, compatibility with size limits for vehicles, skirting, unit size, and design (§17.70.080).
