The city's zoning code discusses application procedures for roof-mounted and ground-mounted renewable energy systems as well as renewable energy systems on extreme slopes (Sec. 17.83.050). Roof-mounted systems that do not exceed max building height may be installed when applicable building and safety permits are obtained. If they exceed max building height, they may be permitted by the director through a minor site plan review application. Systems can be constructed without an extreme slope permit.

The building code includes requirements that require property owners to provide a roof layout plan that illustrates how future installation of a PV system and/or solar water heating system could be accommodated (Sec. 15.04.070).

Solar panels are exempt from mechanical equipment restrictions that apply on the roof of main and accessory structures in residential districts (Sec. 17.56.050).
