Solar Energy

When considering PUD applications, the village considers energy efficient design. Design features or facilities that utilize solar energy are encouraged to the extent they conform with other city objectives (Sec. 9-11-122.f). The municipal code includes a renewable energy systems chapter. The ordinance defines a renewable energy system, a solar energy system, and both building mounted and freestanding solar energy systems (Sec. 9-12-2). General requirements include utility provider notification of the intent to install an interconnected renewable energy system and location of wiring. Aboveground equipment installed for a renewable energy system is considered a structure but freestanding solar energy systems do not count toward the maximum number of detached accessory buildings allowed on a residential lot (Sec. 9-12-3). The ordinance includes provisions for both building-mounted and freestanding solar energy systems. Building mounted provisions relate to maximum height, principal and accessory buildings, orientation, and horizontal projection. Freestanding provisions relate to maximum height, setbacks, and coverage (Sec. 9-12-4).
