The township's zoning ordinance includes a section on wind and solar energy systems (Sec. 203-32.1). Solar energy systems are considered accessory uses for on-site power use; commercial systems require site plan approval and use variances (Sec. 203-32.1.A.1). Zoning and building/electrical permits are required (Sec. 203-32.1.A.2). Standards address color, signage, rooftop and ground-mounted installation placement, screening, and setbacks. Residential ground-mounted systems must be screened from public view and are limited to 800 SF (Sec. 203-32.1.B). General standards also apply to nonresidential installations, though these must be also screened from residential properties; ground-mounted systems are limited in size to 1,200 SF (Sec. 203-32.1.C). Solar installations are also permitted on agricultural properties and structures (Sec. 203-32.1.D). Systems should be located so as not to require tree removal (Sec. 203-32.1.E.4). Decommissioning provisions require removal of systems out of service for a continuous 12-month period (Sec. 203-32.1.F).
Solar panels are listed as permitted elements in the design standards for all building types in the Woolwich Regional Center and Auburn Road Village areas (Chap. 203, Part 2). Passive solar design and building orientation is encouraged (Sec. 203-153.A).
