Solar energy

In the city's Design Guidelines, Guideline #12 is Use the Sun. The objective is to create exterior spaces around buildings that will be used and also that will be easy to keep clear for access to buildings. Asks developers to bear in mind that buildings, vegetation, and land forms can block sunlight and stresses the importance of color and choice of materials (p. 14).

Guideline #21, Mechanical Equipment, encourages the use of alternate energy sources, but requires that hardware associated with these facilities should be incorporated into the building's design; solar panels on roofs must be hidden or de-emphasized so that they are not readily visible from nearby properties (pp. 17-18).
