Solar energy devices are included in the definition of a structure in the ordinance (Sec. 32.100).

Criteria for design guidelines for PDD include energy efficient measures including types of materials used and passive solar design (Sec 32-280-35.1.k).

Solar collectors are exempt from general height regulations in zoning districts (Sec. 32-300.05.3). Solar devices located on a roof (in commercial, office, or industrial districts) shall be hidden by a wall or other similar enclosure extending not more than 1 foot above the height of such equipment and designed in harmony with the building (Sec. 32-400-03.3.b).

Historic overlay district regulations state that minor work is exempt from obtaining a certificate of appropriateness. Solar collectors are considered minor work if they are in locations not visible from a public right-of-way accepted or planning for acceptance in the state highway system (Sec.32-502-05.9.b).
