Solar Energy

This model solar ordinance template from North Carolina classifies solar energy systems into one of three levels: Level 1 (roof-mounted or small ground-mounted accessory systems permitted by right in compliance with standards), Level 2 (smaller ground-mounted systems requiring administrative approval), and Level 3 (larger solar farms requiring conditional or special use approval). All levels are allowed in all zoning districts with varying approval requirements. Standards address setbacks, height limitations, aviation notifications, visibility requirements, and decommissioning.
