This guide applies complete street principals to a variety of urban typologies. The NACTO Urban Bikeway Design Guide is drawn from the experience of the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) members, as well as best practices from around the world. Each chapter addresses a facility category—Bike Lanes, Cycle Tracks, Intersection Treatments, and Bicycle Signals—and illustrates them in context. Given that there is not always a broad consensus on the adoption of the measures, NACTO rates them on a scale. “Required” elements are those “for which there is a strong consensus that the treatment cannot be implemented without.” “Recommended” elements are those “for which there is a strong consensus of added value," and “Optional” elements are those “that vary across cities and may add value depending on the situation.”
