Food Systems

This article describes the tensions and conflicts within the U.S. food system, exploring the major stakeholder groups and their values, interests, and positions. It describes the global industrialized food system as well as alternative food systems of organic farming and the community food security movement. It lists conflicts within the system, but then explores potential food system complementarities through a hypothetical case of decreasing food access in the central city. It closes by offering specific recommendations for how both practicing planners and academics can contribute to the development of a common food systems discourse and agenda.
