Outdoor Lighting

The city addresses outdoor lighting in a standalone development code ordinance. The ordinance intends to protect drivers and neighboring properties from glare, lessen light pollution, promote energy conservation, and preserve the nighttime environment.

It exempts single- and two-family dwelling lighting, traffic control lighting, and temporary lighting approved by the building official. The ordinance offers definitions and general standards on lighting design addressing LED light color (neutral or warm-correlated) and prohibiting glare; maximum illumination levels; methods of lighting level measurement; maximum luminance levels; enforcement of excess lighting and shielding requirements; lighting plans; appeals and variances; existing lighting; and penalties. The ordinance includes illustrations.
