The county addresses outdoor lighting standards in its zoning code (Article VI, §28-87). The intent is to minimize glare, light trespass, overlighting, and skyglow while conserving energy and improving safety.
The ordinance applies to all new or replacement commercial, industrial, and residential outdoor lighting installations. General standards require design, shielding, aim, location, and maintenance to prohibit overlighting, glare, energy waste, light trespass, and skyglow. The code provides further specific standards for nonresidential uses, outdoor recreational facilities, multifamily residential uses, construction lighting, architectural and landscape lighting, and pedestrian-scale lighting. It details site and subdivision photometric lighting plan requirements and lists exemptions from regulations.
