Outdoor Lighting

The township addresses outdoor lighting in the development design standards article of its subdivision and land development ordinance (§167-66). The purpose of the ordinance is to provide lighting in outdoor public places while protecting drivers, neighbors, and the night sky from glare and stray light, and retaining rural character.

The ordinance provides two sets of criteria, one for “intense applications” (multifamily and smaller-lot residential and nonresidential development) and one for single-family residential and agricultural uses. Intense application criteria address illumination levels, lighting fixture design, control of glare and nuisance lighting, lighting plan requirements, installation, inspection, and maintenance; residential and agricultural use criteria address light trespass and hours of lighting. The code also addresses compliance monitoring for safety hazards, nuisance glare, and inadequate illumination levels, as well as enforcement and nuisance abatement.
