Outdoor Lighting

The township addresses outdoor lighting in its zoning code (§170-1514). It seeks to provide lighting in outdoor public places while protecting drivers, pedestrians, neighbors, and the night sky from glare and light trespass.

The code requires lighting for areas where there is public assembly and traverse in hours of darkness; glare, light trespass, and light pollution provisions apply to all outdoor lighting. The code provides definitions. Design criteria address illuminance and luminaire design. The code provides an extensive list of provisions to control nuisance and disabling glare, as well as an extensive list of provisions regulating permanent and temporary/portable recreational and sports facility/event lighting. The code provides lighting plan submission requirements and addresses compliance monitoring for safety hazards, glare, and inadequate illumination levels; nonconforming lighting; and modifications.
