This briefing paper describes how multigenerational schoolyards can help create age inclusive communities. Moving beyond joint use, the author advocates for multigenerational design as a proactive strategy for ensuring that all community members can use this public space. The paper includes case studies from Washington, D.C., Pitt County, North Carolina, and Baltimore, Maryland, and a graphic depicting the role of the planner throughout the multigenerational design process.
