This article introduces the Disablement Process model and examines the relationship between the built environment and physical function in older adults. The results show that older adults who live in communities with more land-use diversity report greater independence in self-care activities, despite similar decline in physical function. Planners can preserve the independence of older adults by encouraging mixed-use neighborhood design.
