Benefits of Compact, Mixed Use Development

This article highlights the range of definitions of walkability in urban design. It tracks three themes that emerged when analyzing these definitions:

  1. Conditions or means (traversable, compact, safe, physically enticing)
  2. Outcomes (lively and sociable, sustainable transportation, exercise-inducing)
  3. Proxy definitions (multidimensional and measurable, holistic)

Figure 1 provides a framework linking these definitions. Table 1 relates these themes to planning and policy interventions.
