This article describes the epidemic of social isolation in cities, comparing it to isolation in prison confinement settings. It reviews literature on prisoner solitary confinement to draw conclusions about the mental health impacts of urban design features. Figure 3 shares specific design considerations that can lead to increased happiness and well-being.
