Historic Preservation

The city’s unified development code establishes a Historic Square District (§14-901), Conservation Overlay District (§14-906), Historic Overlay District (§14-907), and Historic Landmark Overlay District (§14-908). These overlay districts are regulated in terms of use and design standards and are recommended by the Heritage Commission for adoption by the City Council. Work done to all properties in the Historic Overlay District and individually listed properties in the Historic Landmarks Overlay District requires a certificate of appropriateness.
