Report a broken linkIntroducing Planning Concepts to Nonplanners
This audio summarizes some of the design elements that have been utilized in cities to keep people separate, and discusses their role in preventing integrated and equitable cities. The speaker is a planner working on listing and defining exclusionary and inclusionary tools that exist in cities. Nonplanners seeking to understand what allows or restricts neighborhood success should become aware of these design elements and the symbolic and physical barriers they enforce. Some of the tools mentioned are lack of street connectivity, residential parking permits, historical restrictive housing covenants, and "no loitering" signs.
