Climate Change

This functional plan contains adaptation strategies to help the District address the impacts of climate change. It gives an overview of climate change impacts for the District, an assessment of climate risks and vulnerabilities, and presents adaptation strategies to help address these issues. Some of the strategies include increasing the resilience of the energy infrastructure, incorporating climate resilience into development planning and review, and deploying neighborhood-scale resilience solutions.

Urban Heat Resilience

This functional plan gives an overview of the impacts of heat on the District’s infrastructure, community resources, and people and presents adaptation strategies to help the District address these impacts. Strategies include updating standards for roads and transit infrastructure to account for projected extreme temperatures (TU 5.0), improving the thermal safety of buildings to increase resilience to extreme heat (BD 7.0), and reducing risks of extreme heat and urban heat islands through green spaces, cool surfaces, and cooling centers (NC 13.0).
