This report explores how hot climate cities can promote safe and comfortable walking environments using pedway and shadeway systems. It introduces a Cool Walkshed Index to evaluate the thermal comfort level of buildings and neighborhoods for pedestrians, highlights existing noteworthy pedway and shadeway systems, explores the costs and benefits of shadeway and pedway investments, and presents factors to consider in the design of these systems
